How It Works

The calculator adds up six line items: the door itself, an insulation adder, a carriage-style adder, installation labor, a new opener (unit plus labor) and removal of the old door. Every figure comes from one of three public cost guides, Fixr, HomeGuide and HomeAdvisor, transcribed on 2026-09-14 and shown in the tables under the calculator.

The door price is Fixr’s materials-only range for your material and size (single 8 × 7 ft or double 16 × 7 ft); the typical figure is the midpoint of that range. Fixr is the only guide that publishes prices by both material and size, so the HomeGuide and HomeAdvisor installed-by-material ranges appear as a cross-check column rather than in the math.

Where more than one guide prices an item, the low end is the lowest low they publish, the high end is the highest high, and the typical figure is the average of the guides’ midpoints. Insulation uses HomeGuide’s steel door prices by layer: a double-layer (insulated) steel door runs $400–$2,000 against $250–$1,400 for single-layer, so the adder is $150–$600. That difference is applied to every material because no guide publishes an insulated-vs-uninsulated split for wood, vinyl or fiberglass.

None of the guides publishes a regional multiplier, so there is no location input; local labor rates are the main reason the range is wide. Custom sizes are not modelled either: Fixr lists a 16 × 8 ft door at $700–$5,000 materials-only, so expect taller or non-standard doors to land above the double-door range.

Worked Example

A double (16 × 7 ft) insulated steel door with the old door hauled away and the existing opener kept: door $700–$3,500 (typical $2,100), insulation +$150–$600 (~$375), double-door labor $300–$700 (~$488), removal $50–$250 (~$133). Installed total: about $1,200 low, ~$3,096 typical, $5,050 high. HomeGuide’s own double-door figure is $1,000–$3,500 installed and HomeAdvisor’s two-car range is $800–$5,000, so the calculator lands inside both.

FAQ

Why is the high end so far above the typical figure?

The guides’ ranges are wide on their own: a double steel door alone is $700–$3,500 on Fixr. Premium finishes, windows, wind-load ratings and high-cost metro labor push jobs toward the top. Get three written quotes and compare them with the typical figure rather than the ends.

Does the estimate include a permit or electrical work?

No. HomeGuide lists permits and inspection at $50–$250 and HomeAdvisor lists electrical upgrades for a first-time opener at $1,000–$2,500. Add those if your job needs them.

Is a smart or Wi-Fi opener priced?

Not separately. HomeGuide notes that Wi-Fi, battery backup and camera features cost more but does not publish a range for them, so the tool only offers the four drive types the guides price: chain, belt, screw and direct drive.

What if my opening is not 8, 9 or 16 feet wide?

Pick the closest standard size and treat the result as a floor. Fixr’s size table shows 9 × 9 ft at $450–$1,000 and 12 × 7 ft at $500–$1,300 for the door, and HomeGuide lists resizing an opening at $200–$1,000+.

Are these prices for my area?

They are US national ranges. None of the three guides publishes a state or city table, so the tool has no regional factor. High-cost metro areas usually land nearer the high end.
